Edo Govt Gives Ex-Deputy Governor One Week to Return State Assets
The Edo State Government has given former deputy governor, Godwin Omobayo, a one-week deadline to return all government properties still in his possession.
Governor Monday Okpebholo, in a statement issued on Tuesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, directed Omobayo to immediately hand over all state-owned assets acquired or used during his time in office.
According to the statement, the government expressed concern that several official items, including vehicles, documents, and other assets assigned to Omobayo during what it described as his “brief and illegitimate tenure,” have not been returned despite multiple formal requests.
“The continued retention of such property constitutes a clear breach of public trust and unlawful possession of state assets,” the statement read.
The government reaffirmed that all assets used in the course of public service remain the property of Edo State and must be surrendered upon leaving office. It therefore directed Omobayo to return all government property in his custody to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government within seven days.
Itua warned that failure to comply within the stipulated period would compel the government to instruct the Edo State Commissioner of Police to arrest Omobayo and recover the assets through lawful means.
“The Edo State Government remains committed to accountability, due process, and the protection of public property,” he said. “No individual, regardless of former position or political affiliation, will be permitted to unlawfully appropriate or retain assets belonging to the people of Edo State.”
He added that the administration of Senator Monday Okpebholo will continue to uphold transparency, discipline, and integrity in public service, ensuring that all officers are held to the highest standards of responsibility.
“The government urges Mr. Omobayo to respect this directive and avoid actions that could attract legal consequences or further embarrassment,” the statement concluded.
Omobayo was sworn in as deputy governor on April 8, 2024, following his nomination by former Governor Godwin Obaseki after a fallout with then–Deputy Governor Phillip Shaibu. However, Shaibu was later reinstated by the State House of Assembly, rendering Omobayo’s tenure invalid.
