The Federal Government has warned that from September 13 to September 17, 2023, heavy rainfall, which could result in flooding, is expected in 48 towns across 13 states. This is due to the anticipated rise in water levels of River Benue and River Niger, potentially impacting communities along these rivers, extending to Bayelsa State. Residents have been advised to exercise caution.
This warning was released in the National Flood Early Warning Systems Central Hub report by the Federal Ministry of Environment. The affected states include Kano, Kebbi, Katsina, Niger, Kwara, Zamfara, Bauchi, Taraba, Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, Jigawa, and Gombe.
Specific towns at risk in each state have been identified. For instance, in Kano State, towns like Sumaila and Kunchi are flagged. Bauchi State towns like Bajoga, Darazo, and Kirfi could experience flooding. Similarly, areas in Taraba, Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, Gombe, and Jigawa are also on alert.
The report also emphasized that due to rising water levels in River Benue and River Niger, communities along these rivers, reaching Bayelsa State, should take necessary precautions.
Feedback from stakeholders and state representatives on the situation is encouraged.
Prof. Joseph Utsev, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, previously remarked that the government is working diligently to manage the risks associated with heavy rains and the recent release of water from dams and rivers. He emphasized the importance of adhering to the recommendations of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency to minimize flood-related consequences. He reassured that efforts are ongoing to mitigate the impact of the floods.
