In a tragic incident, Mr. Taiwo Oyekanmi, the Director of Finance and Accounts linked to Governor Dapo Abiodun’s office in Ogun State, was fatally shot during an ambush on a bullion van. The Commissioner of Police for Ogun State, Abiodun Alamutu, confirmed the incident that occurred on the NNPC Bridge near Kuto, Abeokuta.

According to Alamutu, Oyekanmi had gone to Fidelity Bank to withdraw funds for the state in a homemade bullion van. Although a police escort was supposed to accompany them, unforeseen circumstances led to the officer’s absence. During their return, assailants blocked the van on the bridge, shot the director, and used a sledgehammer to force open the container holding the money. The robbers, numbering five and wearing hoods, fled with the stolen funds.

The driver, who trailed the criminals to a certain point, lost sight of them near the Conference Hotel. Oyekanmi was rushed to the state hospital, Ijaye, where he was pronounced dead.

Alamutu outlined the investigative steps being taken, including obtaining CCTV footage from the bank and coordinating with surrounding areas to block exits. Governor Abiodun expressed deep shock at the incident, describing Oyekanmi as a dedicated and diligent official. He called for prayers for the deceased’s family and vowed to ensure the swift apprehension of the culprits, assuring residents that such a tragedy would not recur in the state.
