First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, along with prominent government officials, is set to attend a send forth dinner organized by the country’s football body for the Super Falcons. The team will be departing for the FIFA Women’s World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand.
The event, taking place at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, will be attended by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Sports and Youth Development, Ismaila Abubakar, as well as other sports officials. The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) President, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, and General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, will also be present, alongside team members, technical staff, and administrative officials. The dinner is expected to attract corporate leaders, members of the diplomatic corps, and various football stakeholders.
Following the dinner, the nine-time African champions will embark on a 15-day camping program in Australia before entering the tournament, which is scheduled to take place from July 20 to August 20. Nigeria’s first match in the finals will be against Canada at Melbourne’s Rectangular Stadium on July 21, followed by matches against Australia and the Republic of Ireland on July 27 and July 31, respectively, at Lang Park in Brisbane.
The Australia and New Zealand 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup will be the largest ever, featuring 32 teams, equaling the number of teams in the men’s finals held in Qatar the previous year. It is also the first Women’s World Cup hosted jointly by two countries, with Australia representing the Asian confederation and New Zealand representing Oceania.
Notably, Nigeria’s captain, Onome Ebi, at the age of 40, will be one of the tournament’s oldest players, alongside Brazil’s Marta and Canada’s Christine Sinclair.
