Ghali Na’Abba: Reps to Hold Valedictory Session Today

The House of Representatives has concluded all necessary arrangement to hold a valedictory session in honour of Fourth Assembly Speaker, Hon. Ghali Umar Na’Abba, who died on Wednesday, December 27, 2023.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Chairman House of Representatives Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon
Akin Rotimi which was made available to journalists in Abuja, on Wednesday.

According to the statement, ‘The session scheduled for 11:00 am at the House of Representatives Wing of the National Assembly Complex, is to be presided over by the Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. Tajudeen Abbas with other Members of the Green Chamber expected in attendance”.

Those expected at the ceremony, according to the statement includes: members of the family of the Late former Speaker, former Presiding Officers as well as the Principal Officers of the House of Representatives, former legislators and other invited dignitaries.

It would be recalled that a Valedictory Session in Nigeria’s House of Representatives is customarily held to herald the end of an Assembly as well as in very special circumstances however, the House could designate sitting on a specific legislative day as a ceremony in honour of anyone considered deserving.

Report said the statesman who died at the age of 65, was a passionate and courageous public servant who spent his life in service to the country.

The spokesman of the House further stated that the former Lawmaker had made a remarkable contributions to the development of the legislature even as he described Ghali Na’Abba as one among a special breed of Nigerian Lawmakers.

A Kano-born politician, Hon. Na’Abba served in the crucial office of Chairman, House Committee on Appropriations, before fate thrust on him the leadership of the House on July 29, 1999, as the 7th indigenous Speaker of the Nigeria House of Representatives.

Hon Rotimi equally informed that ahead of the ceremony, the House had yesterday adopted a motion moved by the House Leader Hon.Julius Ihonvbere which was seconded by the House Minority Leader,Hon Kingsley Chinda permitting the admittance of visitors into the Chamber tomorrow.

This, the spokesman of the House explained is in pursuant to Order Six, Rule 4(1)(viii) of the Standing Orders of the House of Representatives.

Today valedictory Session will be the first to be held in the life of the 10th House of Representatives – a high honour fitting for the late former Speaker.

Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.

According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.

Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.

Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.

Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
