Göztepe President Open to Transfer Talks with Southampton Amid Paul Onuachu Speculation

By Milcah Tanimu

Rasmus Ankersen, the president of Göztepe, has hinted at the possibility of transfer dealings with Southampton amidst rumors linking Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu with a potential move to the Turkish club during the upcoming summer transfer window.

Addressing reporters at a press conference last week, Ankersen suggested that transfers involving Southampton could materialize, depending on various conditions agreed upon by the clubs, technical staff, and players.

Göztepe, having secured promotion to the Super Lig for the 2024-2025 season by finishing second in the First League table, has already begun preparations for foreign transfers, with Onuachu reportedly topping their wishlist.

The future of Onuachu, currently on loan at Trabzonspor from Southampton, has been a subject of speculation as his loan deal is set to expire soon. Despite facing challenges at Southampton since his transfer from Racing Genk in January 2023, Onuachu has thrived at Trabzonspor, contributing to eighteen goals (14 goals, 4 assists) in twenty appearances in the Turkish top flight.

While Trabzonspor is interested in securing Onuachu on a permanent deal, negotiations have hit a snag due to the player’s asking price.

Ankersen’s close association with Onuachu stems from his previous role as chairman of the board at Danish club FC Midtjylland, where the Nigerian forward spent seven seasons before joining Genk. Onuachu began his professional career at Midtjylland’s academy and went on to score 74 goals in 181 appearances for the senior team.

Onuachu is currently under contract with Southampton until the conclusion of the 2025-2026 season.
