Greece takes measures to prevent virus outbreak at migrant camps

Greece, on Tuesday, introduced measures seeking to prevent an outbreak of COVID-19 in overcrowded migrant camps on the Aegean islands.

Visits to the camps have been suspended for two weeks, all newcomers are being medically screened in detail and all facilities will be regularly disinfected, the Greek Migrations Ministry said.

Isolation wards will be set up for suspected patients.

Further, classes for migrant children have been suspended, along with organised sports, and food is being distributed to smaller groups.

The total number of migrants, living at the Greek island reception centres, is 42,500, according to Greek authorities – more than seven times the intended capacity of 6,000.
