House to Probe Benue Robbery Attacks

Hon. Onuh Urge Security Agencies to Scale Up Security strategies

The House of Representatives urge for immediate investigation into Robbery Attack in Benue State which led to the killings Of Police Officers and scores of civilians in Otukpo Benue State, over the weekend.

The resolution was sequel to a motion of Urgent Public Importance moved during plenary by Hon. Onuh Onyeche Blessing.

In a motion the titled “Urgent Need To Investigate the Robbery Attack And Gruesome Killings Of Police Officers And Citizens Of Otukpo Community In Benue State” Hon Onuh maintained that the primary purpose of government at all levels is to ensure security and welfare of citizens.

The Lawmaker representing Otukpo Ohimini Federal Constituency , recalled a bank Rubbery incident which occurred on the 20th Oct, 2023 at about 3pm in Otukpo Town in Benue State.

Hon Onuh further informed the House that on that fateful day, some criminally minded people and heavily armed gunmen numbering over twenty invaded a peaceful and serene Otukpo community.

The entire Community according to the lawmaker was held under siege by the gunmen for over two hours.

They wrecked havoc using rocket launcher, dynamites, AK 47 as well as other sophisticated weapons.

Onuh expressed worried that these yet to be identified gunmen also embarked on killing spray by attacking the vigilante group which is the first line in the homeland security.

thereafter, the gunmen proceeded to the Otukpo Police Station where they killed the Divisional Police Officer DPO, and three other female police officers.

She further revealed that while attack on the police Station was ongoing, other members of the Robbery gang were busy attacking four Commercial banks simultaneously, killing and carting away huge sum of money.

The lawmakers equally informed that the banks attacked were, Stanbic IBTC, Zenith, UBA and First Bank while several persons were killed in the process.

Consequently, the House has raised Concerned that most residents of the Otukpo community are already being traumatized by unfortunate incident and are greatly feeling Unsafe”

The House also lamented that the Security architecture of Otukpo Community, particularly the police and vigilante group have been demoralize because of the rubbery incident.

The House maintained that business activities within and around Otukpo and Benue state as a whole are already operating under low ebb.

The Lawmaker equally informed the House that commercial institutions have completely shut down operations owing to fear of last robbery incident.

The House thereafter unanimously condemned in a strong terms the gruesome and brutal killing of security personnel during the attack as well as Bank officials and other law abiding members of the community that loss their lives.

Consequently, the House urged the Nigerian police, Department of State Services, DSS,and other Security agencies to as a matter of urgency, make effort to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators of the heinous act.

The House further call on the Federal government to as a matter of urgency increase the security architecture within the town and it’s environs to prevent recurrence

The Mover of the motion also pleaded with the House to set up a committee to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the incident.
