“IG establishes committee for gun licensing and regulations.”
Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has initiated an ad hoc committee to comprehensively review firearm licensing and regulations in accordance with the Firearms Act and other pertinent laws, prioritizing public safety and overall security.
Unveiled on Monday, the committee’s role includes evaluating existing firearm licensing processes to bolster their transparency, effectiveness, and accountability. Collaboration with legal professionals, civil society groups, and field experts is planned to ensure an all-encompassing review.
ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, stated the IG’s strong stance against the unauthorized possession and misuse of firearms, emphasizing their potential to destabilize national peace. He underlined the police’s commitment to addressing the illicit manufacture, sale, and use of firearms. Adejobi also highlighted the importance of acquiring proper firearm licenses and the associated risks of unlawful possession to society’s safety. He reassured the public of the police’s dedication to prosecuting violators.
The IG has directed state Police Commissioners, Zonal Commands’ supervising Assistant Inspectors-General, and tactical squads to intensify efforts against the illegal manufacturing, sale, and possession of banned firearms.
Recall from August, the IG emphasized concerns over gun licensing potentially exacerbating security challenges, resulting in a temporary nationwide halt on firearm license issuance. This move was in response to concerns about the increasing number of illegal firearms. He hinted at a potential review of this decision in the future.
Historically, the Firearms Act has been instrumental in regulating firearm control in Nigeria, mandating individuals to acquire licenses from either the President or the Inspector General of Police for possession.
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
