Insecurity; Akpabio Alleges Plot to Undermine Tinubu
Nigeria’s worsening security crisis took a political turn on Tuesday as Senate President Godswill Akpabio alleged that the recent surge in terrorist attacks across the country is part of a coordinated effort to undermine President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and derail his reform agenda.
Speaking in Abuja during the commissioning of the Nigeria Revenue Service Headquarters, Akpabio claimed that those behind the attacks were deliberately seeking to distract the President. He expressed confidence that the violence would subside after the electoral cycle, insisting that the administration remains on course despite what he described as a “gang-up.”
His remarks came at a time of heightened concern over Nigeria’s fragile security landscape, marked by renewed insurgent activity, deadly military operations, and growing international unease.
Just a day earlier, President Tinubu held closed-door talks with the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, alongside a French military official at the Presidential Villa. The meeting, according to sources, forms part of broader efforts to strengthen international security cooperation, particularly following Nigeria’s recent defence agreement with France for military training and equipment support.
The urgency of these engagements is underscored by recent developments in the North-East. A Nigerian Air Force airstrike targeting insurgents in Yobe State reportedly struck a civilian market near the Borno State border, killing dozens of civilians, including women and children. While the military described the operation as a precision strike on a terrorist logistics hub, Amnesty International condemned it as a reckless use of force and called for an independent investigation.
The Presidency defended the strike, maintaining that the location had been infiltrated and used by insurgent groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province.
Meanwhile, international concern over Nigeria’s security situation has intensified. The United States Department of State recently issued a “Level 4: Do Not Travel” advisory covering 23 states and authorised the withdrawal of non-essential personnel from its embassy in Abuja. The advisory cited threats ranging from insurgency in the North-East to banditry and kidnapping in other regions, as well as persistent violence in parts of southern Nigeria.
Despite these developments, the Federal Government has downplayed fears of a nationwide breakdown of law and order. Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, described the advisory as reflective of internal US protocols rather than the full reality on ground, insisting that most parts of the country remain stable.
However, the convergence of political accusations, civilian casualties from military operations, and growing international alarm paints a troubling picture of a nation grappling with complex and evolving security threats.
As Nigeria confronts insurgency, banditry, and separatist violence across its regions, Akpabio’s claims introduce a new dimension to the discourse—raising critical questions about whether the country’s security challenges are purely operational or increasingly entangled with political undercurrents.
