Jigawa consumer committee happy for 6 months sentencing of fertiliser cheat

The Consumer Protection Committee (CPC) in Jigawa on Saturday said it was excited by the sentencing of a 50-year-old man for stocking 44 sacks of adulterated fertilisers for sale to farmers.

Alhaji Faruk Abdallah, the CPC Chairman, told our correspondent that the convict was apprehended at Hajedia market on Monday, Aug. 23.

He explained that the convict adulterated the fertiliser with loamy soil for sale to unsuspecting farmers at the market.

The chairman added that the commodity, valued at about N500,000, was confiscated while the trader was later arraigned before a Magistrates’ Court in the area.

He hinted that the convict was sentenced to six months imprisonment but, however, given an option of N50,000 fine by the Court.

Faruk advised traders in the state against engaging in practice to defraud consumers, warning that anyone caught would be prosecuted.

He further assured that the committee would continue to monitor markets across the state to protect consumers from adulterated foods, drugs and medication, as well as protect them from shylock traders.
