The Kano chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has refuted claims circulating on social media that it held a secret meeting with President Bola Tinubu and party leaders to sway the Supreme Court’s decision on the appeal filed by the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP). The NNPP filed the appeal two months ago after Nasir Gawuna, the APC candidate, was declared the winner of the contentious March 18 governorship election.
The Appeal Court, led by Justice M. A. Adumeh, had earlier affirmed Gawuna’s victory, stating that Governor Abba Yusuf was not listed in the membership register of his political party, citing an electoral act provision requiring parties to have a record of registered members.
Kano APC Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, dismissed the rumors in a statement issued in Abuja, calling them a product of imagination. Abbas clarified, “There is nowhere such a meeting was held with either Mr. President or any leader of the party.” He emphasized President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to democracy and the rule of law, asserting that the party would not engage in any activity to compromise justice.
Abbas further stated that the party was unaware of any such arrangement and affirmed its determination to pursue the case at the Supreme Court diligently. He assured that there was no tension in Kano, noting that the people were content with the outcomes of both the tribunal and appeal court rulings.
The Kano APC chair pledged to maintain peaceful relationships with ethnic groups and nationalities in the state, despite occasional provocations from the governing party.
