Stephen Olufemi Oni, Ilorin

The Kwara State All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ubandawaki Ward, Ilorin West Local Government Area, has held a special prayer to mark the take-off of the Presidential and National Assembly campaigns in the state.

The prayer, which was organised by the AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq Renaissance Movement, was attended by various Islamic clerics in Ubandawaki Ward and beyond, including Sheikh Umar Faruq Babatunde (a.k.a Sohibul Bayan Watibyan).

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq was represented by his Senior Adviser and Counsellor, Alhaji Sa’adu Salau.

Top attendees included Chairman, Ilorin West Local Government and Chief Host, Shehu AbdulRahaman Babatunde Ladan; Hon. Nuhu Majeed Podo (Ilorin South); Hon. Olayinka Lukman Agbelere (Ilorin East); Chairman, Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority, Alhaji Abdullateef Gidado Alakawa; APC chieftain, Dr. Ghali Alaya; Engr AbdulRahman Giwa; Alhaji Abdulrazaq Jiddah; and Lead Organizer, Hon Mubarak Salau Bello; among others.

The session also served as another platform to formally receive hundreds of PDP members from Ubandawaki Ward, who defected to the ruling APC.

“This prayer session was aimed at consolidating the blessings which the candidacy of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and other APC candidates had received from the Emir of Ilorin, Council of Ulamau and the entire people of the state,” Alhaji Salau told reporters on the sideline of the event.

He said Governor AbdulRazaq has so far enjoyed the blessings and a considerable proportion of goodwill of prominent individuals and people of the state, given the track records of his achievements in the last seven years, hoping such will translate to massive votes come 2027.

He said the State APC, like before, would come up with an issue-based campaign, expressing confidence that Kwarans have witnessed positive change and cannot be swayed by antics of the opposition parties.

Speaking on the ongoing alignment and realignment by some politicians in the state, the Governor’s aide described it as normal, particularly in the electioneering period.

“Like you have witnessed here this morning, there is a massive decamp of members of the opposition parties to the APC, as the largest ruling party in Africa, and the party the people of Kwara state have decided to vote for by landslide once again in 2027,” he said.

“Governor AbdulRazaq as the Senatorial Candidate of APC of Kwara Central has no problem whatsoever. We are in a multi party system, and in full exercise of human rights, people are free to move from one party to another as allowed by the Electoral Act.

“We are assured by the entire people including the youth women, elders and workers because they have seen the track records of good governance which Kwara never had until AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq came to power. So, it is a merit based issue campaign that we are sure will give us a landslide victory in 2027.”

In his Lecture, Sohibu Bayan, said no resident of Kwara State, who is not sentimental or partisan, will deny Governor AbdulRazaq his credit of achieving unprecedentedly and transforming the state.

He said total perfection is due to the Almighty God and admonished the people of the state, including the opposition parties, to always strive to acknowledge good things and whoever does them.

“If you cannot support the (present) administration, don’t distract them. If you cannot appreciate the good works of the administration, don’t condemn them,” the cleric said.

“As I always say that I’m not saying there is none, but I have not seen a governor who spent his whole four years working even on the day of election, except AbdulRazaq. I have also not seen a governor who was committed to serve the state in his 1st and 2nd terms. A Governor who said he would not campaign for a 2nd term but left his works to campaign for him and he won that election based on his track record of achievements.”

Hon Ladan and Hon Mubarak Bello, in their separate remarks, said the prayer was dedicated to seek from Almighty Allah a total guidance, and to ensure the victory of the party at the polls.

“Even though we have security challenges across the country, for us in Kwara, the Governor has been very proactive in addressing the challenge. In terms of welfare and social amenities, all of these and many more have spoken louder to the extent that the people of Kwara Central want Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq as the Senator to represent them,” Ladan said

“The good works of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq speak louder than whatever he is going to say. As we speak now, we have a lot of internal roads including those within Ilorin and at the outskirts. We have built hospitals and revamped old ones. We have thousands of schools being built and rehabilitated,” Bello said.

Highlight of the event was the presentation of campaign vehicles to the APC leadership of Ubandawaki Ward as logistic support for campaigns.

‘I’m Not Afraid of Anybody, Nobody Can Embarrass Me at 82 – Who Is Going to Arrest Me?’ — Onaiyekan

By Fabian Apechihin

Cardinal John Onaiyekan, Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, has dismissed criticism from the Presidency over his recent comments on Nigeria’s economic situation and the growing hardship faced by citizens.

Speaking in a video published on SYMFONI’s official YouTube channel on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, Onaiyekan said he had no reason to apologise for speaking out about the challenges confronting Nigerians.

The Catholic cleric said his comments were made in good faith and were intended to draw attention to the poverty and economic difficulties affecting ordinary citizens.

Addressing the backlash that followed his remarks, Onaiyekan said he was not intimidated by the criticism.

“I cannot be embarrassed. I’m 82 years old. Nobody can embarrass me, you know, and I’m not afraid of anybody. Nobody at this stage now. Who is going to arrest me?” he said.

Onaiyekan also clarified that his concerns were not solely his personal views, saying they reflected the broader position of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, which regularly speaks on issues affecting the welfare of Nigerians.

The cardinal noted that Nigerians were fortunate to have the freedom to express their views, particularly when compared with some other African countries where religious leaders face severe consequences for criticising government policies.

He maintained that religious leaders and ordinary citizens share the same economic realities and stressed the need for continued advocacy until meaningful relief is achieved for Nigerians.

2027: I’ll Restore Fuel Subsidy If Elected President – Atiku

Published

By Fabian Apechihin

Former Vice President and 2027 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has pledged to restore the fuel subsidy regime if elected President of Nigeria.

Atiku criticised the removal of the subsidy by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, arguing that the policy had failed to deliver the promised benefits to Nigerians.

President Tinubu announced the removal of the fuel subsidy during his inaugural address in May 2023, a move that was followed by a sharp increase in the prices of fuel, goods and services and growing economic pressure on citizens.

The Federal Government, however, has maintained that subsidy removal has increased monthly allocations to state governments and provided resources for infrastructure and other development projects.

Atiku, who had initially supported the removal of the subsidy, said his position had changed based on the impact of the policy on Nigerians.

“I initially did not oppose the removal of the fuel subsidy. But now that it has been removed, where is the money? Where has the subsidy money gone? Has it been used to improve healthcare, education or security?” Atiku asked in an interview shared on social media.

“If I win the presidential election, I will restore the subsidy. And anyone who stole Nigeria’s subsidy funds must return the money,” he added.

Atiku is seeking to challenge incumbent President and All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Tinubu, in the 2027 presidential election. He is also expected to face other major contenders, including Peter Obi.
