The Kwara Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has generated N2.5 billion in excise revenue and intercepted contraband items valued at N478 million in its anti-smuggling operations.
The Acting Controller of the Command, Najeem Akanmu Ogundeyi, disclosed this during a press conference in Ilorin on Wednesday.
Ogundeyi expressed concern that despite repeated warnings against smuggling, some individuals continue to engage in acts of economic sabotage.
“These individuals, driven by illicit profit, have continued to test the resolve of the Command through persistent attempts to smuggle prohibited and restricted items into the country,” he said.
He, however, assured that such illegal activities have been met with firm, decisive and intelligence-driven enforcement actions by officers of the command.
According to him, the seizures reflect the command’s renewed operational strategy anchored on intelligence gathering, coordinated patrols and strategic deployment of personnel along identified smuggling routes.
Items intercepted by the command include five units of second-hand vehicles, popularly known as Tokunbo cars; 60 sacks of second-hand clothing; six jumbo sacks of second-hand clothing; and two bales of used clothing.
Other items seized are 222 units of used compressors, 15 pieces of used tyres, and 44 bags of 50kg imported sugar.
The command also intercepted 317 jerrycans of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) at various patrol bases, 1,107 bags of 50kg foreign parboiled rice, 120 sacks of illegally mined lithium ore, and nine vehicles loaded with foreign parboiled rice.
Ogundeyi said the interceptions underscore the command’s commitment to intelligence-led enforcement operations aimed at curbing economic sabotage, protecting legitimate businesses, safeguarding national revenue and ensuring compliance with laws regulating cross-border trade.
He commended the synergy between the Kwara Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service and other security and regulatory agencies for the successes recorded.
The acting controller also expressed appreciation to the Controller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, and the management team for their support and guidance.
