LASTMA Firm on Arresting Defaulting Motorists, No Hesitation

In a statement on Friday, the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) emphasized its commitment to promptly enforce traffic laws and penalize offenders within the state.In response to circulating publications claiming that Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, prohibited LASTMA officials from arresting violators, the agency’s General Manager, Mr. Bolaji Oreagba, has debunked the claim. In a statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, Oreagba clarified that the governor never issued such an order and affirmed that LASTMA remains authorized to apprehend errant motorists. He further emphasized that the false reports are the work of anonymous individuals spreading misinformation, despite previous efforts by LASTMA management to refute them since February 2020.Oreagba expressed his perplexity regarding the intentions of individuals who consistently mislead others to violate the amended traffic laws of the state, which were enacted by the State House of Assembly in 2018.The LASTMA chief reiterated that it is part of the agency’s duty to uphold and enforce the traffic laws of the state. He emphasized that the officers and personnel of LASTMA are committed to enforcing these laws without hesitation whenever they are violated. Their goal is to improve the state’s transportation system by promoting the smooth flow of traffic and reducing road accidents.

Furthermore, Oreagba urged the motoring public to disregard any fake news circulated by anonymous individuals that aim to encourage them to violate the traffic laws of the state. He emphasized that all operations of LASTMA are guided by laws and ethical standards.

The LASTMA chief also highlighted the agency’s adoption of modern technological innovations to tackle traffic challenges. He mentioned the utilization of new hand-held Traffic Management Solution (TMS) devices, which enable real-time monitoring and recording of traffic violations on the roads. Additionally, the agency focuses on improving signalized intersections and junctions to enhance traffic flow.
