Liberian President George Weah commended Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen after his impressive performance in the Super Eagles’ 3-2 victory over Sierra Leone in an African Cup of Nations qualifier. Weah, a former football star himself, personally wrote a letter to Osimhen, urging him to continue working hard and achieving new milestones following his successful season with Napoli.
President Weah watched the match from the presidential box alongside Nigeria’s ambassadors to Liberia and Sierra Leone, as well as officials from the Nigerian Football Federation. Osimhen showcased his skills by scoring two goals in the 20th and 33rd minutes, helping Nigeria secure a 2-0 lead.
Weah praised Osimhen’s striker abilities, highlighting his excellent positioning, athleticism, and fighting spirit. The Nigerian forward is currently the leading scorer in the qualifying series with seven goals, surpassing Senegal’s Sadio Mane.
With his performance in this match, Osimhen’s international goal tally now stands at an impressive 17 goals in 25 matches, placing him joint-sixth on Nigeria’s list of top scorers, alongside Samson Siasia.
Osimhen’s outstanding display attracted a swarm of Nigerian fans in Liberia, with members of the Nigerian community and supporters from Liberia and Sierra Leone gathering near the Super Eagles’ dressing room, chanting, “We want Victor!”
Nigeria secured their place in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finals with the victory, accumulating 12 points alongside Guinea Bissau in second place. Unfortunately, Sierra Leone’s team was eliminated from the competition, finishing with only five points.
A total of 14 countries, including Ivory Coast, Morocco, Algeria, South Africa, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Tunisia, Egypt, Zambia, Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, and Mali, have qualified for the Ivory Coast 2023 tournament. The remaining 10 teams will be determined in September, with Nigeria hosting their final qualifying game against Sao Tome and Principe.
