A 41-year-old man, Adewale Muritala, on Thursday appeared before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, for allegedly obtaining the sum of N630,000 on false pretence.
Muritala, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of fraud and stealing.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor, Insp Ayodele Adeosun, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on June 26 at about 4:00 p.m. at Arike Street, Age-Mowo, Badagry.
Adeosun said the defendant collected the sum of N630,000 from the complainant, Mrs Damilola Adisa, on the pretext of supplying frozen chicken to her.
He said the defendant, who did not supply the frozen chicken as promised, converted the money to his personal use.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 314 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015.
Our correspondent reports that Section 287 stipulates three years’ jail term for stealing.
The Chief Magistrate, Lazarus Hotepo, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Hotepo said the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction with evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State government.
The chief magistrate adjourned the case until Oct. 26 for mention.
