At least two Security Operatives from both sides of the military and police in Adamawa have been feared death with few others wounded following a fierce gun battle that ensued between men of the the two Security forces over what was described as mere misunderstanding.
While Cause of the conflict between the two forces remains a matter of conjecture , the misunderstanding started at the Target junction located in the heart of the Yola twin city.
The source further narrated that the entire neighbourhood was apparently thrown into confusion by the sounds of gunshots as they scamper for safety.
According to eye witness account, the whole scenario paints a faint picture of a war situation as frightening gun shots rented the air and sending shivers down the spines of members of the public.
According to the same source, the threat to public safety which persisted throughout the night was further reinforced in the early hours of the next day when some uniformed personnel suspected to be men of the Nigeria Army attacked the police headquarters and shooting sporadically, leaving on their trail a police inspector, Jacob Daniel dead.
National trail check revealed that the early morning raid by the suspected military was to compensate for the actions of the police who shot and hid one of its personnel.
The Commissioner of Police, Afolabi Babatola of the Adamawa State Police Command condemned the attack on the police formation by another security agency and called on officers and men to be careful and to guard against acting on impulse and attacks on security personnel.
“I strongly condemned the recent conflict between Police and Military Officers along Target Junction, Yola North Local Government Area that resulted in exchange of fire and brutal attack on the Police facility and killing of Inspector Jacob Daniel.
“Accordingly, I have ordered an immediate investigation into the matter with a view to ensuring peace and justice”, he said.
CP Afolabi Babatola further warned that “attacks on all security officers on the point of duty would no longer be tolerated under whatever guise”, emphasizing that the Command holds the lives of all security personnel sacrosanct, and such unwarranted conflict would be strictly treated in accordance with existing laws.
He reiterated the commitment of the Command to the protection of lives and property adding that it is obligatory and vital to work with other sister security agents in protecting the fundamental rights of security operatives for the furtherance and fulfilment of their sacred mandate of serving and protecting the citizens better.
The police Boss appealed for calm as the top Management of both security agencies are doing everything legally possible to address the situation.
When contacted, the Brigade Commander, 23 Armored Brigade, Brigadier General Gambo Mohammed said, “one of my men was shot and hidden by the police. My men went to rescue their own”.
