Mohbad’s Swift Burial Explained by Father: Yoruba Culture and Land Legacy

Joseph Aloba, the father of the late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, famously known as Mohbad, has shed light on the quick burial of his son, who tragically passed away at the age of 27 on September 12, with the burial held the very next day.

In a recent interview shared on Instagram by Temilola Sobola (@TemilolaSobola) on Tuesday, Mr. Aloba cited Yoruba cultural traditions as the rationale behind the rapid interment. He explained that in Yoruba culture, it is customary not to delay the burial of a deceased individual when both parents are still alive.

Aloba also noted that had Mohbad passed away at an older age, the possibility of preserving his body in a mortuary for a later date might have been considered.

Furthermore, Aloba disclosed that the burial site of his son was a piece of land that Mohbad owned, and he had given it to him to construct a church. He clarified that the decision to bury him expeditiously was in line with Yoruba customs.

“In Yoruba land, his corpse is not the kind to be kept when both of his parents are still alive,” he emphasized.”The land where Mohbad was buried is his sole property, the only land I know him to have owned. He indeed gave me the land to build my church because we had both agreed to build the church there, and since that’s the only land I knew him to have.”

Mohbad, a former signee of Marlian Music, Naira Marley’s record label, left the label in February 2022.The management of Mohbad announced a candlelight procession and tribute night for the late artiste to be held on Thursday (tomorrow), while the Lagos State Governor has invited the Department of Security Services to participate in the investigation of the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.
