Islamic clerics, representing various sects under the banner of Ulama’a, conveyed details of their discussions with the military junta and other Islamic scholars in Niger Republic to President Bola Tinubu. The president encouraged them to persist in their dialogue, aiming for a peaceful resolution to Niger’s political standoff.

The clerics consistently expressed their aversion to military intervention in the neighboring country that shares borders with Nigeria.

Recent history recalls the military junta’s bloodless coup on July 26, which led to the ousting of the democratically-elected Nigerien President, Mohamed Bazoum. In response, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), with President Tinubu at its helm, has been advocating for the return of the ousted president, warning of possible sanctions, including military repercussions, should the junta resist restoring democratic leadership.

In their follow-up meeting, led by Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, the clerics echoed their earlier sentiment, urging for a non-military, amicable resolution. Following their advocacy, President Tinubu directed them to return to Niger and proceed with their discussions.

Sheikh Bauchi, after his meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, briefed the press about their interactions with President Tinubu on behalf of ECOWAS. He emphasized the president’s support for their mission and reiterated their collective desire for peace in the region. He expressed gratitude for the president’s trust in their diplomatic endeavors, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring peace through dialogue.
