Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation in Nigeria, reiterated the country’s unwavering commitment to the fundamental principles of press freedom during a courtesy visit by the US Charge d’Affaires to Nigeria, Mr. David Greene. The minister emphasized the crucial role of press freedom in fostering a vibrant democracy and ensuring transparency in governance.
While expressing support for press freedom, Idris called on the United States government to assist Nigeria in establishing best practices in the media space, particularly by implementing fact-checking mechanisms to combat misinformation, fake news, and mal-information.
Idris also highlighted Nigeria’s dedication to democracy and urged the United States, as a key ally, to deepen its support for the administration of President Tinubu. He outlined the key focus areas of the Renewed Hope Agenda, including food security, poverty eradication, economic growth, job creation, access to capital, social inclusion, rule of law, and the fight against corruption.
The minister provided an overview of President Tinubu’s efforts to attract foreign investment, including his participation in economic fora and engagements with business leaders globally. He mentioned the president’s recent presence at the G20 Summit in India and the Saudi-Africa Summit in Riyadh, as well as his current participation in the G20 Compact with Africa Conference in Berlin, Germany.
In response, Mr. Greene assured Nigeria of the United States’ full support for its democracy and media growth. He acknowledged Nigeria’s critical role as a partner in regional security and economic development, emphasizing the US commitment to providing consistent training in the media sector over the years.
