Genk’s Nigerian forward, Tolu Arokodare, found himself subjected to online racism after missing a crucial penalty during their match against Club Brugge in the Belgium Pro League.
The game, held at the Cegeka Arena, saw Genk aiming to surpass third-placed Brugge in the league standings with a victory.
In the 18th minute of the game, Arokodare, who has scored eight goals in 10 starts for Genk this season, had the opportunity to give his team the lead from the penalty spot. However, his miss shifted momentum in favor of Club Brugge, who ultimately secured a 3-0 victory with goals in the 18th, 73rd, and 85th minutes.
Following the defeat, Arokodare faced racial abuse on social media, drawing condemnation from fans. Babatunde, one of the fans, condemned the abuse, calling it unacceptable behavior.
Arokodare joined Genk in the winter transfer window of 2023 as a replacement for another Nigerian striker, Paul Onuachu, who moved to Southampton. Since then, Arokodare has scored 13 goals in 50 appearances for Genk.
