“Nigerian Referees: Caught Between Football’s Enemies and Victims”

Published

By Milcah  Tanimu

When it comes to Nigerian referees, two distinct perceptions arise. On one hand, they are often viewed as adversaries, if not the primary antagonists of Nigerian football. On the other hand, they are pitied as victims of the perils within Nigerian football. These contrasting views are strongly held, depending on whom you ask.

For many Nigerian league players and coaches, referees are a source of countless frustrating stories, yet paradoxically, they maintain off-field relationships with these same referees. Football administrators also fall on either side of this divide, depending on their rapport with match officials. Fans, left to observe from a distance, often find themselves bewildered by the inexplicable events that occur in the game they love. When results don’t favor their teams, they vent their frustration on referees, sometimes even physically assaulting them.

From the Nigeria Professional Football League to the Nigeria Women’s Football League and various lower-tier competitions, different factors have contributed to these perceptions.

Nigerian referees have been assaulted on numerous occasions due to overzealous fans who perceive them as enemies of their teams. This has left referees in a precarious position, where they are both victims and adversaries of the sport. It’s rare to find situations where referees are openly applauded; they are more often criticized and condemned.

In 2015, our correspondent witnessed this hostile culture during a Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) match between Sunshine Stars and Lobi Stars at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure. Sunshine Stars were in contention for the league title and a continental spot but were frustrated by Lobi Stars, who took a 3-2 lead against the run of play.

With about 10 minutes remaining, projectiles rained onto the pitch, triggered by perceived unfavorable officiating. The unruly atmosphere made it impossible for the match officials to continue the game, much to the fans’ anger.

Sunshine Stars players tried to calm the situation, but their efforts were in vain. The officials found themselves stranded on the pitch, at the mercy of furious fans intent on assaulting them. A vehicle, believed to belong to the chairman of the Ondo State Football Agency, was driven onto the pitch to rescue the referees. Fortunately, the vehicle absorbed the blows intended for the officials.

The final 10 minutes of the game were played in Abuja, and Sunshine Stars were subsequently banned from their home stadium for the remainder of the season.

This incident exemplifies the challenging environment Nigerian referees operate in, caught between passionate fans and their duty to uphold the integrity of the game.

Transfer: Gabriel Jesus Could Leave Arsenal as Napoli Show Interest

Published

Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus could leave the club this summer, with Italian side Napoli reportedly interested in signing the Brazilian forward.

According to Sky Italia, Napoli’s new manager, Massimiliano Allegri, is a long-term admirer of Jesus and is keen to explore the possibility of bringing him to Serie A.

Jesus and Allegri share the same agent, Giovanni Branchini, who was reportedly spotted at Napoli’s pre-season training camp in Castel di Sangro on Friday.

A meeting could reportedly take place to discuss a potential move for the Arsenal forward.

Napoli’s interest could depend on their ability to offload one of their existing strikers. The club would reportedly need to find new destinations for Lorenzo Lucca, who spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest, or Romelu Lukaku before making a move for Jesus.

Arsenal are reportedly willing to consider offers of around £18 million for the 29-year-old, who has entered the final year of his contract with the Gunners.

Jesus joined Arsenal from Manchester City in 2022 and could now be heading for a new challenge in Italy if Napoli’s interest develops into a formal transfer.

LaLiga: Mourinho Introduces Four New Rules at Real Madrid

Published

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has reportedly introduced a series of new rules at the club after identifying what he considered bad habits within the dressing room.

Mourinho returned to the Spanish giants for a second spell this summer and has already begun implementing changes to improve discipline and professionalism within the squad, according to AS.

One of the new measures concerns players’ diets. The Portuguese manager has reportedly ended the freedom for players to eat whatever they choose, with the club’s nutritionist now responsible for overseeing their meals.

Under the new system, menus will be carefully structured and determined according to the nutritional needs of the players.

Mourinho has also introduced a disciplinary measure for players who arrive late to training. Such players will reportedly be required to undergo individual gym sessions.

Another rule concerns injury rehabilitation. Players recovering from injuries will now be expected to complete their rehabilitation at the club’s training ground under the supervision of Real Madrid’s medical and fitness staff rather than working independently with external personnel.

The changes are part of Mourinho’s reported efforts to establish greater discipline and control within the Real Madrid squad following his return to the club.
