The Nigerian Labor Congress (NLC) in Akwa Ibom State staged a protest to address the prevalent economic hardship in the country. Led by Chairperson Sunny James, the protest journeyed from Idongesit Nkanga Secretariat to the State House of Assembly and then to Government House in Uyo. James lamented the excessive hunger and hardship faced by the people due to unfavorable policies of the federal government.
Addressing the Speaker of the House, Mr. Udeme Otong, James urged legislative action to address the people’s problems, emphasizing the need for meaningful laws. He highlighted specific demands, including workers’ gratuity, promotion arrears, and an increase in wages, as well as a reduction in the prices of staple foods. The protest aimed to pressure the governor, Pastor Umo Eno, to address workers’ concerns promptly.
In response, Speaker Udeme Otong acknowledged the orderly and peaceful nature of the protest and pledged to consider the NLC’s demands. He assured the protesters of the governor’s commitment to alleviating their suffering and mentioned legislative measures to reduce the cost of living and commodity prices. The Speaker affirmed his support for the NLC’s cause and promised to facilitate legislative action on their demands.
