The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), through its Southwest chapter, has condemned the recent killings of 16 travellers from Kano in Uromi, Edo State, calling on Nigerians to embrace peaceful co-existence regardless of ethnic or religious differences.
According to reports, the victims, believed to be hunters, were killed by a local vigilante group. The incident has sparked nationwide outrage and concern over rising ethnic tensions.
A chieftain of the NNPP, Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, described the killings as a tragic reminder of the dangers of jungle justice. In a statement, he stressed that Nigeria, as a civilized nation, must rely on the rule of law and due process.
Ajadi expressed deep sorrow over the deaths, extending condolences to the Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, and the bereaved families. He called for unity among Nigerians, urging citizens to see one another as brothers and sisters, as emphasized in the national anthem.
“This incident is regrettable and uncalled for, especially at this critical point in our nation’s history,” Ajadi said. “We must pray for the souls of the departed and take steps to prevent a recurrence.”
He cautioned against individuals taking the law into their own hands, insisting that all suspicions of wrongdoing should be reported to the appropriate security agencies.
Praising Governor Yusuf’s efforts to avert possible reprisal attacks, Ajadi added, “May God console you and the people of Kano. We pray our land will not witness such tragedy again.”
The NNPP urged the federal and state governments to intensify efforts to bring those responsible to justice while calling on citizens to uphold the values of unity, peace, and lawful conduct.
