The NNPP is embroiled in internal disputes, with Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso’s faction holding a separate National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja to challenge his suspension. This faction announced the expulsion of the new acting National Chairman, Major Agbo, and several key members responsible for Kwankwaso’s suspension. These events followed Kwankwaso’s earlier suspension by the Board of Trustees over alleged anti-party activities.
Agbo and the party’s founder, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, had been suspended previously, and both opposed the decision. They argued that the party’s presidential candidate should face repercussions for suspicious recent activities. BoT’s Secretary, Babayo Abdulahi, accused Kwankwaso of secret meetings with key political figures without board consent, leading to his demotion from the NNPP national leader role.
In response, the National Auditor of the party, Ladipo Johnson, claimed Kwankwaso’s suspension was unjust. He further refuted the existence of divisions within the party. Confirming a NEC meeting in Abuja, it was declared that several members, including Agbo and Aniebonam, were expelled.
An ally of Kwankwaso, Philip Ohinu, stated that Kwankwaso’s camp controls the party and refuted claims of its factionalization. Meanwhile, Agbo maintained his stance on Kwankwaso’s suspension but acknowledged that the party is not in crisis.
