Atletico Madrid emerged triumphant with a crucial 2-1 victory against Real Betis on Sunday, breaking their recent slump and extending their undefeated streak against Los Verdiblancos to 10 matches. The win provided a much-needed boost for the home team, who had only secured one victory in their last seven matches across all competitions.
The hosts seized an early lead just seven minutes into the game through an unfortunate own goal. Mario Hermoso initiated the attack from Betis territory, with Memphis Depay delivering a low cross from the right. Despite Hector Bellerin’s interception, the ball deflected off German Pezzella, then goalkeeper Rui Silva, before finding the back of the net via the post.
Atletico continued to dominate the first half, with Silva making a crucial double save to deny Depay. In the 25th minute, VAR awarded Alvaro Morata a penalty after he was fouled by Silva. However, the goalkeeper made an impressive save, denying not only the penalty but also two subsequent rebounds. Morata later redeemed himself before halftime, heading in a rebound after Silva thwarted Rodrigo De Paul’s shot.
Betis displayed improved performance after the break, with Jan Oblak denying Willian Jose’s header. However, the visitors narrowed the gap just after the hour mark when William Carvalho struck a magnificent curling shot from 25 yards out, marking his first goal of the season.
In the final 15 minutes, Oblak played a pivotal role in preserving Atletico’s lead, making crucial saves to thwart Ayoze Perez and Gabriel. The victory serves as a timely morale booster for Diego Simeone’s side ahead of their UEFA Champions League second leg against Inter Milan. Meanwhile, Betis’ five-match unbeaten streak comes to an end, and they continue to seek their first away win against a top-half team this season.
