As reactions continue to trail comments attributed to Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Pantami, the Joint Council on Civil Society and Religious Affairs in Nigeria has alleged that the minister is being persecuted for initiating reforms in the telecommunications sector of the country.
The council led by Bishop John Okafor which probed into the issue claimed that allegations leveled against Pantami were not only untrue but unfair, unjust to his person and character.
The group position is coming against the backdrop of media reports that Pantami is not only a religious extremist but previously had links with extremists groups like al-Qaeda and Taliban.
The group frowned at the development adding it was a fundamental plot to dampen the image of the country before the international community.
Acknowledging that Pantami was an Islamic cleric, it wondered why his antecedence has now become a source of blackmail by his traducers.
“We hold this to be the inalienable right of every nigerian including Dr Isa Pantami. That Dr Pantami as a sheikh preaches the convictions as laid in the holy Islamic literature same we do according to the bible,” It noted.
The council thereby unanimously passed a vote of confidence on the person of Dr Pantami and appealed for moral support to public officials so to have a basis to hold them accountable.
It added: “The council also found out that Dr Pantami at no time had any personal link with any extremist both as a sheikh and public official.
“The council investigations also found out that the allegations were a mere protests by interested stakeholders who are affected by the novel reforms in the telecommunication sector under the supervision of Dr Pantami.”
