Party Crisis Divides APC NWC as Principal Officers Meet Tinubu
APC NWC Divided as Adamu Meets Tinubu over National Assembly Principal Officers
The selection of principal officers for the National Assembly has sparked a division within the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee (NWC).
The split in the NWC was triggered by the objections raised by APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, regarding the process used to choose the principal officers.
In an effort to resolve the crisis, Adamu and the National Secretary of the party, Iyiola Omisore, held a meeting with Tinubu on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the following appointments: Senator Opeyemi Bamidele as Majority Leader, Senator Dave Umahi as Deputy Majority Leader, Ali Ndume as Chief Whip, Lola Ashiru as Deputy Whip, Mwadkwon Davou as Minority Leader, Kamorudeen Olarere as Deputy Minority Leader, Darlington Nwokeocha as Minority Whip, and Rufai Hanga as Deputy Minority Whip.
However, Adamu expressed discontent with the process during a meeting with NWC members and APC governors, stating that the party was not involved in the selection of officers. He emphasized the need for formal communication and adherence to established norms.
Adamu and Omisore met with Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa, where they were ushered into the President’s office.
Nevertheless, some key members of the NWC expressed their dissatisfaction with Adamu’s stance in a private conversation with selected journalists. They distanced themselves from the chairman’s personal opinion, asserting that the emergence of National Assembly leaders had received the President’s approval.
The committee members also revealed that several governors advised Adamu to reach out to the National Assembly leadership to resolve the matter amicably.
Another NWC member expressed concerns that Adamu’s actions were consistently contrary to the government’s goals, thereby undermining the smooth operation of the APC federal government under the leadership of President Asiwaju.
One committee member suspected that Adamu’s actions were deliberate, aimed at conveying a subtle message. During the meeting, Senator Hope Uzodinma, Chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum, attempted to signal Adamu to stop discussing the matter publicly, but Adamu continued. Uzodinma later appealed for reconciliation and urged Adamu to prevent a crisis.
An anonymous ally of the APC national chairman suggested that Adamu’s statement had been largely misconstrued and that handling him required tact.

Caught in the middle: Ortom’s silent dance between two camps.
There are growing questions about where Mr. Samuel Ortom, a former Governor of Benue State and a prominent figure in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), truly stands politically ahead of 2027.
Ortom was a key figure in the divisions within the PDP before the 2023 general elections and was widely associated with support for Mr. Peter Obi, who finished third in that contest. More recently, however, he has publicly expressed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
The latest discussion began after a visit by Mr. Peter Obi to Benue State. Reports indicate that a vehicle said to belong to Ortom was used to receive Obi at the Air Force Base airport in Makurdi. It is not clear who authorized the use of the vehicle, and Ortom has not commented publicly on the matter.
During the same visit, Obi was reportedly prevented from travelling to Yelewata, where he had intended to condole with families affected by violence. Obi’s team attributed the blockage to supporters of Governor Hyacinth Alia.
The Governor’s spokesman, Sir Tersoo Kula, denied any involvement by the Governor. He suggested the incident may have been staged to damage the Governor’s reputation, or that it could have resulted from disagreements within Obi’s own support base.
Ortom has not issued a statement clarifying his position on the 2027 elections or on the vehicle in question. Attempts to reach him were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
