Umar Damagum, the Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has emphasized the party’s commitment to showcasing leadership by actively involving smaller political parties in its initiatives. Damagum made this assertion during a meeting with a delegation from the Kukah Centre, headed by its Executive Director, Atta Barkindo, in Abuja on Thursday.
Accompanied by PDP officials including Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary, Umar Bature, the National Organizing Secretary, and Setonji Koshoedo, the Acting National Secretary, Damagum highlighted the party’s endeavors to accommodate emerging smaller parties within the evolving democratic landscape. He cited instances where the PDP had collaborated with parties like the Labour Party and the New Nigeria People’s Party, sharing deputy positions during the National Assembly’s internal elections.
Speaking about the upcoming role of PDP members in parliament, Damagum predicted a forthcoming dynamic within the National Assembly. He acknowledged the diversity of interests among members but underscored that the party’s overall stance remains paramount. He stressed the need for inclusivity and affirmed that the party’s voice would be amplified in the legislative arena.
Damagum lamented the alleged shortcomings of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in employing technology for the 2023 presidential election, expressing his disappointment at the perceived manipulation of the process. Despite this, he assured that the party would pursue lawful avenues for redress.
Umar Bature, shedding light on PDP’s inclusivity efforts, disclosed that the party encourages participation by individuals with disabilities through incentives and waiver of forms. He also cited the example of a governor with albinism in Akwa Ibom State and the party’s push for increased women’s participation at the grassroots level.
Atta Barkindo, from the Kukah Centre, indicated that their visit aimed to explore strategies for enhancing internal democracy, promoting pluralism, and ensuring fairness in Nigeria’s political framework.
The Kukah Centre delegation included Esrom Ajanya, the Program Manager, Mackit Rendep, the Communication and Research Director, Stephen Klanzama, and political expert Emeka Diru.
