The United Nations and Lagos state have called on the private sector to spearhead change in Africa. This call was made during the Africa Social Impact Summit 2023 in Lagos. The summit’s theme centered on harmonizing global visions with local actions for sustainable development outcomes in Africa.
UN’s Resident & Humanitarian Coordinator, Matthais Schmale, highlighted the pivotal role of Africa’s private sector in accelerating the continent’s progress towards the 2030 agenda. He urged business leaders to prioritize sustainability in their decision-making and align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He emphasized the benefits of adopting the 10 principles of the UN Global Compact and encouraged businesses to prioritize hiring qualified women, citing its significance in addressing poverty, promoting sustainable development, and fostering good governance. Schmale also underscored the importance of public-private partnerships in amplifying development initiatives, emphasizing that they should focus on societal impact, not just profit.
Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, branded Lagos as Africa’s new tech hub. He expressed optimism that the summit would offer solutions to Africa’s challenges and hasten the realization of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. He praised the organizers and partners for their effort in convening the summit.
Mrs. Olapeju Ibekwe, CEO of Sterling One Foundation and co-convener of the event, explained the summit’s objective to engage the private sector in shaping market-driven solutions. The summit, she said, aims to fast-track impact investment in Africa towards achieving the SDGs. Key areas of focus include climate solutions, health education, agriculture, renewable energy, and circular energy.
