ABUJA — On Tuesday, a coalition known as Concerned Citizens Against Corruption (CCAC) staged a protest at the Federal Ministry of Justice headquarters, urging the Attorney General of the Federation to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the tenure of Mele Kyari, the former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
Led by Convener Comrade Kabir Matazu, the protesters expressed dissatisfaction that, despite President Bola Tinubu’s dismissal of Kyari and the entire NNPCL board on April 2, 2025, no formal probe has been launched into alleged corrupt practices during Kyari’s leadership.
The group highlighted concerns over the rehabilitation of government-owned refineries, questioning the transparency of billions of dollars reportedly spent without clear outcomes. They also pointed to an alleged $2 billion debt owed by NNPCL to Matrix Energy Limited, purportedly being serviced through daily crude oil allocations without payment.
“Nigerians are disenchanted that the President has only stopped at removing the former leadership without taking steps to investigate how Kyari and his team ran the organisation,” Matazu stated. He emphasized the need for clarity on the financial dealings and contracts executed during Kyari’s tenure, particularly those involving significant public funds.
The CCAC called on the Attorney General to act promptly, asserting that a thorough investigation is essential to restore public confidence and ensure accountability within the nation’s oil sector.
