Senator Diket Plang, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Labour, Employment, and Productivity, as well as the Vice Chairman of the Committee on Federal Character, has refuted speculations regarding a potential impeachment of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Addressing concerns, Senator Plang emphasized that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government would not support any move to impeach Akpabio. He asserted that Akpabio’s position as Senate President is stable and affirmed by the election process, highlighting the regional representation within the Senate leadership.
Plang clarified, “When there are issues, you raise them for a rethink and future correction. Nobody will remove the Senate President; he is stable.” He further delineated the geographical distribution of key positions within the Senate, indicating representation from various regions of the country.
The call for Akpabio’s removal gained momentum in March 2024 following the suspension of Senator Abdul Ningi, representing Bauchi Central, over allegations of budget padding. However, amidst these calls, Francis Okoye, an APC chieftain, expressed support for the suspension of Senator Ningi while voicing solidarity with Senate Leader Godswill Akpabio.
Okoye criticized demands for Akpabio’s resignation or removal, indicating a stance in favor of maintaining Akpabio’s position within the Senate leadership.
