The House of Representatives member for Ukwa East Federal Constituency of Abia State, Rep. Uzoma Nkem-Abonta has raised alarm over the activities of a Chinese firm, Inner Galaxy, accusing of engaging in modern human slavery because of the dehumanizing conditions under which Nigerians work.
Rep. Abonta while calling for the investigation of the the operations of the Chinese firm, revealed that the company treats it’s Nigerian workers like slaves in their own country.
He said:” It’s alarming that in this modern age that humans could be treated like slaves in their own country when a worker in Inner Galaxy is paid N500 after working from 6am to 7pm daily.
“A management that says if you fail to call your employer master, you will be flogged like a condemned villain shouldn’t operate in a country like ours.
“If you disobey, a police man is detailed to deal with you and you are thrown out of Inner Galaxy that warehouses 10 different companies.
“Our female employees there are sexually harrassed before and after they are employed because of a monthly stipend of N20,000.
“Their radioactive waste products has killed all aquatic life in Imo River because they bought an expanse of land up to the bank of the Imo River.”
The Abia lawmaker further explained that the Chinese company has no insurance cover for heavy duty machine operators who are disengaged by the company in the event of injury at the work place.
“This is wickedness of the highest order and lawmakers probing the allegations should be allowed to have access to the company as everything is done in secrecy.
“Workers are not allowed to use their phones while inside Inner Galaxy giving credence to the fact that their operations is shrouded in secrecy.
“I am insisting and demanding that the committee investigating Inner Galaxy should immediately go to Ukwa East to dig deeper into the operations of the company,” he added.
