Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro, has assured Nigerian fans that Napoli star Victor Osimhen will find the back of the net in their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) match against Cameroon. Despite Nigeria’s dominance in the group stage, scoring only three goals from 41 attempts raised concerns about their goal-scoring abilities.
Addressing these concerns in a press conference, Peseiro staunchly defended Osimhen, emphasizing his importance to the team. Despite the goal drought in the last two matches, Peseiro expressed confidence that the talismanic striker would break the deadlock in the crucial round-16 clash against Cameroon.
Acknowledging Osimhen’s missed opportunities in the previous games, Peseiro remained optimistic about the top scorer’s ability to contribute significantly. He highlighted Osimhen’s role in creating chances against Equatorial Guinea and expressed confidence in the team’s performance in the tough competition.
“For our next match, Osimhen will score; he’s important for the team. He’s the top scorer, but this is a different tournament and tough competition. He deserves to reach the top position because against Equatorial Guinea, he created so many chances and he scored. Did Equatorial Guinea beat us? No, we shared the point, and I know we will beat them next time because it’s not easy in this competition,” remarked Peseiro.
As the Super Eagles gear up to face the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, Osimhen, named the Confederation of African Football Best Player for 2023, aims to make a significant impact and silence doubters in the AFCON 2023 tournament.
