Tinubu Reviews Document as CBN Investigator Submits Interim Report

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has announced that the Federal Government will soon make public the audit report stemming from the investigation into the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). President Bola Tinubu appointed Jim Obazee, a former Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, as the Special Investigator for the CBN on July 28, 2023. The President tasked the special investigator with examining the CBN and key Government Business Entities, with a direct reporting line to the President’s Office.
Akume revealed this information during a press conference in Abuja on Nigeria’s 63rd Independence anniversary. He stated that the report would shed light on the role of poor governance in the country’s current challenges.
He emphasized, “Most of these problems confronting us are due to bad governance. The present government has confronted and is confronting these challenges. When President Bola Tinubu came on board, he took a very sound decision at the CBN. That singular act led to a massive improvement in the capital market, as experts have told us, it is something that has never happened in the past 15 years.”
In a letter dated July 28, 2023, Tinubu instructed Obazee to ensure the probe uncovered government funds in the possession of private individuals. The letter directed, “In accordance with the fundamental objective set forth in Section 15(5) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), this administration is, today, continuing the fight against corruption by appointing you as a Special Investigator, to investigate the CBN and Related Entities. This appointment shall be with immediate effect and you are to report directly to my office.”
It has been disclosed that Obazee submitted an interim report to the President’s office over a week ago. Multiple officials indicated that the preliminary report was submitted for the President’s consideration. The interim report is expected to guide the President in making critical decisions to advance the country’s progress.
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
