Jemima Shetima-Balami, a 24-year-old Mass Communication student at Federal Polytechnic Mubi in Adamawa State, has reportedly taken her own life after her boyfriend ended their relationship. The second-year National Diploma student, who was on industrial attachment with Adamawa State Television, Yola, allegedly consumed a substance suspected to be rat poison.
Sources indicate that Jemima’s boyfriend, believed to be a lecturer at Modibbo Adama University (name withheld), was the one who terminated the relationship. The tragic incident occurred at her residence in Vinikilang, close to ATV Yola, where she was undergoing her industrial attachment.
Hailing from Garkida town in the Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Jemima was the only daughter of her father, who had to report the suicide to the police.
While the father reported the case as a suicide, there are conflicting accounts suggesting that Jemima’s troubled relationship with the lecturer might have played a role in her decision to end her life.
Confirming the incident, a police spokesperson stated, “The father of Jemima reported that she committed suicide by taking a deadly substance. Another version had it that she visited her boyfriend, a lecturer at Modibbo Adama University Yola, and was told to quit the relationship. Angered by the news from her boyfriend, the deceased took poison. We are investigating the matter, and justice will be served.”
The police urged the public to seek amicable resolutions to their issues rather than resorting to extreme measures, emphasizing that suicide is an offense.
