The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), in conjunction with the Taraba state government through the Taraba State Primary Health Care Development Agency (TSPHCDA) has vaccinated over forty- seven thousand women of childbearing age between against maternal and Neonatal Tetanus in Wukari local government Area of Taraba State.
The Director of Health in the local government Mrs. Esther Theophilus Daye who spoke to journalists at the end of the five days exercise in Wukari on Wednesday, disclosed that over 20, 000 children and adults were also vaccinated against other child killer diseases and Covid-19 during the exercise.
She said that Wukari local government was identified as one of the council areas with high rate of cases of maternal and Neonatal tetanus, adding that the exercise will go a long way to reducing the cases to a minimal level in the area.
The Director noted that the large turn out of Women and children for the vaccination was encouraging, promising that after the second and third phase of the exercise, the local government will completly eradicated the diseases in the area.
According to Mrs. Daye, lack of access roads especially in hard to reach communities, has forced women of childbearing age to seek for the services of unskilled traditional birth attendants who engage in unhygienic practices.
She added that it was discovered that (Neonatal Tetanus) is passed to infants during Childbirth through the use of unsterilised instrument while cutting the umbilical cord.
Also speaking, the State Health Technical Facilitator in the local government Mr. Bala Tsokwa attributed the success of the program in the area to team work , sensitisation and enlightenment campaign before the commencement of the exercise.
He disclosed that during the exercise, the medical team carried out integreted vaccinations in each of the designated areas, including vaccination for Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus, COVID-19, and Rotavirus.
Tsokwa commended the medical team comprising of PHC officials of UNICEF, WHO, and the Media for a job well done.
