Youths in Niger state under the auspices, Youth Lead Nigeria Movement has given the Abuja Electricity Development Company (AEDC) and the GENCOs a four weeks ultimatum to end epileptic electricity supply to the state or close shops.
Coordinator of the group, Comrade Mohammed Saidu Etsu handed down the ultimatum at a press briefing in Minna said the warning for the power distribution agencies to sit up or quit has become necessary as the state can no longer continue to suffer when the three major hydro power producing dams are domiciled in the state.
Lack of power, Saidu Etsu said would now resulted into continue stay vulnerable to aggression from host communities hence the advise that the two companies should heed the call to sit up to their responsibilities or quit.
The group also lamented the challenges faced by communities and therefore urged stakeholders in the sector to hasten up in the payment of N13 billion grants rent accruing to the, Shiroro, Kainji and Jebba dam communities as revenue to the state government.
While calling on the federal government to as a matter of urgency ensure the take off of the HYPADEC, the youths who had staged a peaceful protest early this year said failure to heed their call would compel them to take a legal action to ensure communities get deserved justice.
Etsu lamented the pathetic power supply and the attendant environment hazards due to generating companies to its communities, including; flooding, displacement and health related problems and small businesses suffer.
He said, unstable power supply is not only causing serious business setback and joblessness among the teaming youths and the problems caused by inadequate electricity supply has continued without any action from the AEDC and government of the day hence the people cannot longer bear with their continued existence in Niger state.
