Tobi Amusan, World Champion, couldn’t defend her title, finishing 6th at the World Athletics Championship in Budapest. Jamaican Danielle Williams secured the title, closely followed by Puerto Rico’s Jasmine Camacho-Quinn and USA’s Kendra Harrison.
In 2022, Amusan had claimed victory with a 12.40 (African record) and set a world record of 12.12, besting Kendra Harrison’s 2016 record of 12.20. This year’s final saw her competing against formidable opponents, including Olympic champion Camacho-Quinn.
Had she won, Amusan would’ve joined the ranks of Gail Devers, Michelle Perry, and Sally Pearson, each holding at least two gold medals in the women’s 100m Hurdles at the World Championships.
Amusan, still the world record holder despite the setback, had advanced to the final with a 12.56s run, overshadowing Jamaican Achkara Nugent’s 12.60s. Her participation had been in doubt due to concerns from the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU). However, she was cleared of any infractions just two days prior to the championship. The tribunal’s statement confirmed no Anti-Doping Rule Violations against her.
The disappointment of the championship for Nigeria continued, with Ese Brume finishing fourth in the women’s long jump. As Day 6 concludes, Team Nigeria remains medal-less.
In her previous season, Amusan had showcased remarkable performance, setting the world record of 12.12 seconds and clinching titles at various events, including the Commonwealth and Diamond League.
