The Member representing Ika Nation on the board of the Delta State Oil Producing Area Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Hon. Cordilia Anyangwu, has called for stiffer punishment for those found guilty of rape.
Hon. Anyangwu made the call when members of the Choice of Women Initiative, a non-governmental organisation, paid her a courtesy visit in her office at Agbor.
She said “it is high time security agencies, the Judiciary, non governmental organisations and relevant authorities tackled rape issues with more commitment, including domestic violence and child molestation.”
She expressed worry over the daily cases of rape, child molestation and domestic violence in the society, saying the situation called for urgent attention.
She advised parents and caregivers to always keep watch over their children and check the kind of companies their kept.
“We are in very wicked and evil days; hence, the need for everyone to wake up and avoid regret. Victims of such acts are usually affected negatively and it reflects in the society,” she stated.
Also speaking, Coordinator of the Choice of Women Initiative, Mrs. Ann Aghware, said they were in her office to seek collaboration with DESOPADEC in the fight against child abuse and molestation.
According her, rape and child abuse were on the increase.
“We are therefore calling for urgent measures to curb this societal menace.
“That is why we decided to come to you to use your good office to join forces with us in curbing these excesses against the female folks and humanity in general,” she added.
We want to also appeal to members of the society, groups and public spirited individuals to collaborate with us in assisting to seek justice for victims of rape and other abuses
