The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike has approved what can be considered as massive rehabilitation of schools across the territory.
As part of the approvals running into N27billion, the FCT Administration has set aside N13. 1billion naira for the accelerated rehabilitation of no fewer than 18 schools, which represents the first batch of the projects.
This was disclosed by the Mandate Secretary, Education Secretariat, FCTA, Dr. Danlami Hayyo at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday.
Hayyo explained that the Minister who had earlier approved renovation of 40 schools in 100 days decided to change the approach to whole school.
According to him:”The minister has decided to change the system of renovation because if you renovate only 2 blocks of classroom or 3 blocks of classroom in 1 particular school, maybe in the next one year or two years you must go to that particular school and renovate another one. Which is not good.
” And the whole school approach is the situation whereby all the facilities, all blocks, toilets, boarding hostel, dining, and everything in the school will be renovated. So on that, he also approved to spend 13.1 billion Naira on the first batch of whole school approach.
Among the 18 schools to be rehabilitated according to him includes LEA Primary School Bagusa,
Primary and junior secondary school Waru in AMAC
Karshi model school
LEA primary school, Apo resettlement
Junior secondary school, life camp,
School for the deaf, Kuje
Junior secondary school, Kwali
LEA primary school, Utako
Abaji Modern Primary School
Junior secondary school, Maitama among others and some part of FCT College of Education Library.
He explained that the second batch of whole school approach would involve complete rehabilitation of 4 schools which are Government Science Technical College, Kwali Government Science Technical College, Maitama and Government Secondary School, Wuse 2.
” These 4 schools, about 4. 5billion naira is going to be spent in changing the structures of these schools where everything will be changed. This is the second batch of the whole school approach, Hajjo stated.
He added that rehabilitation of the 18 first batch schools are expected to be completed and commissioned to mark one year anniversary of President Bola Tinubu’s administration come 29th May 2024.
