Following a protest at a government building in the South-West, individuals described as Yoruba Nation agitators were strategically positioned within the premises. Several of these agitators were subsequently apprehended by security forces.
The breach of the government building reportedly occurred after Ms. Modupe Abiola Onitiri, purportedly the wife of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, claimed herself as the President of a new Sovereign State called the Yoruba Nation in a widely circulated video. Ms. Onitiri, currently residing abroad, is not officially recognized as one of Abiola’s wives.
Leaders in the South-West have condemned the actions, vowing to prevent any uprising in the name of agitation. Prominent agitators such as Chief Sunday Adeyemo (Sunday Igboho) and Chief Banji Akintoye have distanced themselves from Onitiri and called for her arrest.
Dr. Wale Fasakin, an aide of the late MKO Abiola, clarified that Onitiri was not among Abiola’s officially recognized wives, emphasizing the gravity of her declaration.
Governor Seyi Makinde’s government in Oyo State condemned the actions as treasonable felony, asserting that attempting to seize control of government premises constitutes terrorism.
The Oyo State Police Command paraded 21 individuals suspected of involvement in the agitation, while a joint security operation uncovered a weapons cache in Sanyo.
The Ondo State government warned against disrupting peace in the state, asserting opposition to any groups undermining federal initiatives.
The Ogun State Police Command labeled the agitators as armed robbers and vowed to treat them accordingly, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law and unity.
Ekiti State police heightened security around the Government House following the incident, emphasizing the need to reject violence and uphold democracy, justice, and unity.
The South-West Caucus urged dialogue and peaceful resolution of grievances, emphasizing the commitment to democracy, justice, and unity.
