Mineral Exploitation: Speaker Urge For Private Sector Partnership to Unlock Potential

The Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. Tajudeen Abbas has call for strong partnership between private sector and the government to exploit maximum benefit available in the solid minerals sector across the country.

The Speaker made the call yesterday during the public policy dialogue on sold minerals event organized by the House of Representatives Committee on solid Minerals in Abuja.

Hon Abbas further used the occasion to praise the renewed vigour in exploring large scale exploitation in the Nigeria solid mineral sector across States of the federation.

During the event, stakeholders who spoke urged the government to make policies that could invite more investors into solid minerals sector.

The speaker, Hon Abbas who was represented by his deputy Hon. Benjamin Kalu explained further that solid mineral sector if fully utilize has the capacity of unlocking the economic potentials in the country.

The Speaker, however lamented illegality in the sector emphasizing that such illegal ways currently present in the sector has led the country into insecurity, banditary, kidnapping among others.

Speaking in similar vein, the governor of Nasarawa state, His Excellency Abdullahi Sule says Nigeria has over 40 mineral resources untapped in commercial quantity across the country.

The governor equally informed that Nigeria as a country has full potentials of replacing crude oil as the country’s highest foreign exchange earner when it’ prudently manage.

He however appealed to different states state governors to look inward to ensuring active utilization of minerals sectors in their states.

He also appealed to lawmakers to make effective laws that will help to regulate the sector, making it competitive and lucrative for all stakeholders.

Earlier in his address, the Chairman, House Of Representatives Committee on Solid Minerals, Hon Gaza Gbefwi promised to present the proposed sold minerals bill before the house soon, expressing the hope that when eventually pass and assented to by president Tinubu, the law will address address challenges in the solid mineral sector.

Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.

According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.

Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.

Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.

Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
