According to Spotify’s recent announcement, the earnings of Nigerian artists from royalties on the platform surged in 2023, surpassing a remarkable N25 billion mark. This figure showcases a significant increase from previous years, with the number of artists earning over 10 million NGN quadrupling since 2018.

Sub-Saharan Africa’s music market, as outlined in the 2024 IFPI report, stands out globally with a remarkable growth rate of 24.7%. This surge in revenue, fueled predominantly by paid streaming services, contributes 24.5% to the total revenue, with Nigeria playing a pivotal role.

The Nigerian music industry’s remarkable growth trajectory is further exemplified by its dominance in streaming. With a population of approximately 230 million and a vibrant music scene, Nigeria’s artists are making waves globally, propelled by platforms like Spotify.

Spotify’s recent Loud & Clear report sheds light on the streaming economy, revealing key insights into Nigerian music streaming. In 2023 alone, streaming royalties for Nigerian artists on Spotify exceeded N25 billion, marking a significant leap from previous years. Moreover, the report highlights the democratizing power of streaming, with over half of these royalties going to independent artists or labels.

Listeners on Spotify discovered Nigerian artists nearly 950 million times in 2023, showcasing the platform’s role in amplifying their voices globally. Additionally, Nigerian artists dominated the country’s daily top 50 chart, owning over 80% of the tracks featured. Furthermore, over 1,400 Nigerian artists were added to Spotify editorial playlists, further expanding their reach.

Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy, Spotify’s Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa, emphasized the platform’s commitment to supporting African creators. She noted that the significant growth in royalties reflects the talent and global appeal of Nigerian artists. With Spotify’s continued investment in African artists, this momentum is expected to fuel the Nigerian music revolution further.

The surge in streaming revenue for Nigerian artists underscores the increasing exportation of Nigerian music globally. Notably, Rema’s ‘Calm Down’ featuring Selena Gomez became the first Afrobeats song to reach 1 billion Spotify streams, highlighting the genre’s global impact and potential for further growth.

Abuja-Lokoja Highway Gridlock: FRSC Blames Motorists’ Impatience

Published

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has expressed frustration over motorists’ lack of cooperation in easing the gridlock on the Abuja-Lokoja highway.

Kogi State Sector Commander, Kumar Tsukwam, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that officials had been battling since Sunday to clear the traffic, which stretched from Ogbobo/Ozi to the Murtala Mohammed Bridge in Koton-Karfe.

He attributed the gridlock to ongoing road construction, broken-down vehicles on the single lane, and motorists’ impatience.
“Some drivers blocked opposing lanes, worsening the situation. We are doing our best to restore free movement for travellers,” Tsukwam said.

Motorists and commuters lamented the hardship caused by the standstill. Mohammed Yusuf, a driver, said he spent nine hours travelling from Abuja to Lokoja on Sunday.
“I left Abuja before 3 p.m. but didn’t reach Lokoja until midnight. The fuel wasted on the road is unbearable, especially with current prices,” he said.

Another traveller, Christopher Adamu, recounted spending the entire night in traffic after leaving Abuja in the evening. He urged authorities to take urgent measures to address the situation.

NAN reports that a construction company is currently working on the right lane of the highway between Koton-Karfe and Abaji, forcing traffic onto a single lane and worsening congestion.

Nigerian singer and Nollywood actor, Chike Osebuka, has dismissed the idea of marriage, describing it as a “stupid step” while stressing that his happiness is tied to financial stability.

The 32-year-old artiste made this known during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, where he revealed that he currently has no plans to settle down.

“In my personal opinion, I think it’s a stupid step to get married. For me to be happy, I need a lot of money. This is not even carnal—I just like money. I want money,” Chike stated.

Reflecting on his career, the singer admitted he never imagined music would become his profession until after completing university.

“I would say maybe right after my university, I knew music is what I’ll do for a living. Before then, I just used to sing and disturb everybody around me,” he said.

Chike also recalled enduring tough financial times early in his career, which pushed him into acting roles for about two years just to stay afloat.
