In a brazen attack, fewer than 50 gunmen dressed in military uniforms stormed the Dawaki community in Abuja on Sunday evening, May 19, 2024, abducting at least 20 people. Dawaki, a densely populated area opposite Gwarimpa Estate along the Kubwa Expressway, was targeted around 7:30 PM. The attackers, armed with various weapons, operated for over an hour.
Details of the Attack
Hosea Christopher, a resident, reported that the gunmen abducted 17 residents from three houses and a street near Fulani Junction. Five of the abductees managed to escape while being taken towards a mountain on the outskirts of the area. As the gunmen headed towards a forest near the Usuma Dam, they were confronted by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS). An exchange of gunfire ensued, but the gunmen managed to flee.
Other sources indicated that more than 20 people were abducted. Abel James, another resident who escaped abduction, described the attackers as wearing uniforms and masks, which raised his suspicion when they began shooting sporadically. He evaded capture by hiding in an under-construction house and observing the attackers as they left.
Response from Authorities
FCT Commissioner of Police Benneth Igweh confirmed the incident on Monday, stating that he led the rescue operation around Ushafa-Shishipe through the Mpape hills. Following a distress call, police advanced on the assailants, tactically ambushing them at Ushafa Hill via Bwari down to Shishipe. This resulted in a fierce gun battle, causing the gunmen to flee with bullet wounds, and some abducted victims were rescued. The rescued individuals are currently receiving medical attention in the hospital.
Community Impact
The attack left the community in shock, with many vehicles around Fulani Junction damaged by bullets. A community leader highlighted the extent of the damage and the residents’ fear and uncertainty following the violent raid.
Ongoing Investigations
Security forces, including DSS and soldiers, continue to investigate the incident and search for the remaining abductees. Two of the gunmen were reportedly captured by security personnel during the confrontation at Usuma Dam. The authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in the region and the need for increased measures to protect communities from such violent attacks.
