The Abia State Government has taken the decision to cancel the recently held Preliminary Test Sessions examination for student nurses due to allegations of wrongdoing against some individuals involved in the exam’s conduct. The cancellation follows protests by affected student nurses, prompting the state government to address the issue transparently.
The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Okey Kanu, announced the decision after the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti. Kanu emphasized the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability, stating that a committee had been set up to investigate the allegations. The preliminary report recommended the cancellation of the exam, and investigations will continue.
Kanu highlighted that the committee engaged with all stakeholders, including the protesting students, and the institutions’ leadership involved in the exam. The examination, conducted as a Computer-Based Test (CBT), raised concerns about its integrity. While no one has been indicted or arrested yet, the government intends to conduct a new examination in the near future.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, reiterated that the government’s actions align with Governor Otti’s commitment to sanitize the system and address corruption in the health sector. Ekeoma emphasized that the government inherited challenges and is working to clean up the issues created by the previous administration. The cancellation of the exam is seen as part of the ongoing process of sanitization and reform in the health sector.
