A 28-year-old individual named Adaeze Lawrence is presently held by the Abia State Police Command for allegedly stealing a one-month and two-day-old baby boy from her friend. Lawrence reportedly built a rapport with the baby’s mother, Onyinyechi Owujie, and exploited their friendship to carry out the theft.
Lawrence, a hairstylist, had a connection to Owujie through her elder sister, who was schoolmates with the suspect. Seizing the opportunity, she proposed a celebration for the newborn and took advantage of the gathering to abscond with the infant.
The police were informed of the incident, leading to the arrest of Lawrence in her hiding place. ASP Chioma Chinaka, the State Police Public Relations Officer, conveyed that the arrest occurred on August 14, 2023, following credible intelligence received by the Abia State Police Special Weapons and Tactics Team in Aba.
During questioning, Lawrence initially denied the crime, even claiming that the baby was hers. However, medical examinations contradicted her assertions, compelling her to confess. The biological mother of the child identified the baby, confirming the abduction that took place on August 6, 2023.
Chinaka revealed that investigations are ongoing in the case and advised the public to prioritize child safety by maintaining vigilance and caution, particularly in public settings.
