Bandits have launched an attack on a secondary school located in the Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, resulting in the tragic deaths of two teachers. The victims were a recently-married couple who were both educators at the BECO Comprehensive Secondary School in the Kwi community.

The incident reportedly occurred during a meeting held by the teachers to compile student results in preparation for the upcoming ‘Speech and Prize-giving Day’ scheduled for Friday. The bandits, identified as Fulani herders, entered the school premises with their cattle on Monday afternoon, around 3 pm, disrupting the gathering. The school staff requested the bandits to remove their livestock from the school environment, but the situation escalated when the armed bandits began firing at the teachers, killing two and injuring others, including the school’s Vice Principal.

Youth leaders in the community, including Moses Gwott and the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youths Moulders Association, Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the attack. They called for a ban on open grazing in the area to prevent future occurrences and expressed concern about the unchecked movement of armed individuals on farmlands, leading to intimidation of locals.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Alfred Alabo, could not be reached for comment at the time of the report.
