Former Attorney General of the Federation, Michael Aondoakaa, has called for foreign military intervention to address the worsening security crisis in Benue State, urging the United States to carry out aerial operations against armed groups in the area.

Citing a report by The Punch on Monday, January 5, 2026, Aondoakaa said the scale and persistence of violence in Benue have overwhelmed existing security measures and now require decisive external support. He made the remarks while speaking at a political gathering in Makurdi, as part of activities linked to his bid for the Benue governorship in 2027.

According to Aondoakaa, armed groups masquerading as herders have entrenched themselves across several local government areas, destroying farmlands, displacing residents, and unlawfully occupying communities. Residents of parts of Benue State have raised serious security concerns following reports of suspicious movements by suspected armed herders and large herds of cattle in Logo and Gwer West Local Government Areas.

According to a report by Vanguard on Monday, January 5, 2026, tension has spread across several border communities after residents observed unusual influxes of armed men believed to be herders.

A resident of Logo LGA disclosed that groups of suspected armed herdsmen were seen moving into Tombo Council Ward from Awe and Keana Local Government Areas in neighbouring Nasarawa State. He said the individuals arrived simultaneously through different routes, accompanied by numerous cattle.

The source revealed that while some of the suspected herders were believed to have set up camps on the outskirts of Gidin-Mangor village, others were reportedly moving through abandoned settlements, apparently searching for remote hideouts within nearby forests.

According to him, the movements began before the Christmas period but have intensified in recent weeks, heightening fear among residents. He noted that the growing concern stems from the occupation of forests and deserted villages located close to populated communities.

Forests allegedly affected include Yashina Debo and Ashaku forests in Mbaiwen Clan, Ijor Tsafa forest in Mbazar Clan, Agyo forest, as well as several abandoned settlements within the area.

Residents said the continued presence of the suspected armed men has created panic, restricted movement, and disrupted social and economic activities in Tombo Council Ward.
